Freeman’s had been owned by the same family for six generations, on his own website, before Alasdair Nichol and two employees acquired it through a friendly management buy-out in 2016. Nichol spearheaded the company’s drive to promote single-owner collections and was a significant player in the creation of Freeman’s departmental fine sales. Alasdair Nichol is a Scottish native who studied fine painting at Aberdeen’s Gray’s School of painting after being born in Edinburgh. Later, he received a Master’s degree from the University of Ulster in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
After moving to Glasgow, where he managed the first sale of Scottish contemporary art at the esteemed Glasgow School of Art, he started his career in the auction business in Edinburgh in 1985. He first worked at a flagship saleroom in London where he specialised in Modern & Impressionist paintings before moving to New York as Head of Fine paintings in 1997.

I was kind of surprised when I saw him on the current broadcast of “Antiques Roadshow.” Apparently my concerns are shared by many others as before I even entered in his full name on Google, suggestions filled in “Is Alasdair Nichol sick?”
His weight loss is evident but I was struck by his baldness which is unusual for him. My immediate thoughts were perhaps it is a reaction to chemotherapy but I suppose it’s possible he’s shaving his head as part of his “new look.” I noted his voice is strong and clear and he projects as a healthy man; I certainly hope that is so. He is a beloved staple of the Roadshow and I’m sure I’m not the only one who wishes him the best.
