This is the first time the prized prize has been given to a photojournalist. Because it offers a chance for lawmakers and journalists to put politics aside and collect money for charitable causes, the Mid-Winter Ball is a significant occasion on the federal parliamentary calendar.
“Alex deploys his acute eye, a singular ability to zero in on the essence of the subject matter he handles, and an extraordinarily insightful intellect to provide his audience fresh and deeper comprehension of current events,” his bureau colleagues testified in recommending him for the award. He acts in the same way that all great journalists have always acted. He leaves the office and moves close to the activity.
“Alex’s pictorial studies of the heat, the confusion, and the silence of the House of Representatives and the Senate provide his audience access and context to the parliamentary process that is unsurpassed, and he does this as a press gallery photojournalist.
His countless depictions of unguarded moments, which serve as distillations of nuanced feelings and moods and are frequently tiny scoops in themselves, epitomise the proverb “a picture is worth a 1,000 words. Alex is able to capture and freeze images at the critical moment when they would typically be little more than a blur to the rest of us, if we were to see them at all.
Above all, his stories are clever and well-balanced. He consistently manages to surprise, occasionally to shock, and always to reveal truths that are otherwise hidden from the rest of us.
The judges concurred: “Alex Ellinghausen’s beautiful photojournalism was the standout entry this year in a strong field of quality work by brilliant veterans and rising stars. Alex regularly catches the drama and exquisite detail of political events in his paintings. It frequently contributes as much – and frequently more – than any written work to analysis, breaking news, highlighting the mood, and exposing the frank reality of a topic.
Both those who tread the political stage and those beyond the country’s capital, his work explores the psyche and atmosphere of the people in his photos. In front of a packed Great Hall in Canberra, Alex spoke briefly to accept the prize. He thanked his colleagues at the bureau and stated that he sincerely enjoys what he does every day.
