The sole reigning two-division champion of the UFC made her retirement announcement on Saturday, walking away victorious from UFC 289’s main event after making yet another faultless title defence. To win a wide unanimous decision in her final fight, Nunes outclassed Irene Aldana.
Over the course of her two title reigns, she has successfully defended her bantamweight title six times. Nunes won the fight by unanimous decision from all three judges, 50-44, 50-44, and 50-43.
After laying down her two UFC belts and her gloves in the middle of the octagon, Nunes remarked, “My mom was asking me to do this for so long, she can’t take it any longer.” “Nina [Nunes], my partner, has been at my side throughout my entire career; she is currently pregnant, and we have travelled this path together for a very long time.
I made the decision that I should enjoy what I created now while I’m still young. I must travel because I want to spend time with my family. Additionally, I need to spend more time with my family in Brazil.
“I left them when they were so small to come here and pursue my dreams and everything; I never had any doubts that I would become a champion. But it was incredible when I won the title. A two-time champion as well. It was Nunes’ (23-5) last flawless performance, and by repeatedly pounding Aldana for five rounds, she reasserted her dominance over the women’s 135-pound class.
The champion never had a problem, dominating a hesitant Aldana with a combination of standup knowledge and mat skill. In major strikes, Nunes outlanded the Mexican star 142-41, won the takedown struggle 6-0, and connected on 53% of her efforts compared to Aldana’s pitiful total of 28%.
Aldana’s greatest opportunity came early in the opening round when Nunes was stunned by a well-timed counter right hand, but the future Hall of Famer simply ate it and kept attacking.
Nunes, 35, leaves mixed martial arts as the most decorated female fighter in UFC history. She is also one of the most decorated champions of all time, regardless of gender.
Nunes stated, “I’m from a small city in Brazil called Pojuca; no one knows where it is in Brazil, but I managed to get here. “I became a champion and am currently Brazil’s lone champion. I’m going now, thanks.
