The audio series that Bernstein and Marritz are producing is an investigative documentary that traces the several failures that culminated in the breach of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. They announced they were leaving WNYC after 20 years to work on the new series with Audacy-owned Pineapple Street Studios, which produced Wind of Change, Missing Richard Simmons, and 70 Over 70. This is their first production since that announcement.
The untitled show will examine the uprising, how the attack came dangerously close to overturning democracy from the inside, as well as Trump’s ongoing denial of key details surrounding the events of January 6 and his recent declaration that “I’m not like coups!” That occurs at a time when congressional Republicans have resisted an impartial, nonpartisan probe akin to the 9/11 panel.
Almost every red warning, from the emergence of internal terrorism to the radicalization of law enforcement and the military, went unresponded to by a wounded democratic system and law enforcement machinery oriented on foreign dangers. Similar to 9/11, clear warnings went unheeded and cooperation between federal and local intelligence organisations was lacking. It will look into the various ways the Trump Administration actively contributed to both the circumstances that led to the first assault on the Capitol in more than 200 years and the ineffectiveness of the government’s response to the danger of attack.
