Andrea Irvine News
The heroin addiction troubles of her on-screen son are featured in the current narrative, which Red Rock actor Andrea Irvine believes is quite current given how much of an issue heroin use is in Dublin.
The native of Belfast who portrays Garda Sergeant Angela Tyrell in the TV3 soap opera said she is frequently startled by the events that go place in the inner-city neighbourhoods. “Dublin shocks me because I work out of the Lab on Foley Street and the Abbey Theatre, and that whole area is rife with people off their heads, totally wrecked,” she told the Herald.
They’ve obviously just shot up, and you can see them dragging buggies with children while doing that thing where they slowly, slowly collapse.
“I never stop being amazed by it. It’s shocking to see, but I don’t know enough about drug policy to comment. Dublin looks to be particularly hard-hit by heroin addiction. She also has a great deal of empathy with her character’s predicament as she deals with her son Conor resuming heroin use because she is a mother to two sons herself, Harry (11) and Joseph (14).
Seeing your child suffer is so difficult. A lot of it still occurs behind closed doors because we still live in a society where it’s severely stigmatised, she said.
“A criminal conviction is also a possibility, and you worry about the damage that will be done to your reputation.” She claimed that trying to keep her son’s drug addiction hidden from her fellow gardas adds additional pressure to her character’s situation.
“Angela has received a lot of attention this season, both inside and outside of all this drug-related drama. As the two worlds begin to converge in series two, you can really start to see how it has an affect on her work.
She made a suggestion that Detective Nikki Grogan, who is portrayed by Valerie O’Connor, may also experience significant events in the near future. She praised Kim Revill and said that she is “just fantastic” when referring to the series’ excellent writing, which won the Ifta award.
She has a keen sense of what is happening in the lives of modern women. She doesn’t define women as sidekicks, she insisted. She places mothers and wives at the centre of their own tales rather than portraying them.
