In November 1959, Hulme went back to work as a flight attendant in England. The Cater Street Hangman, her debut book, was released in 1979. She was listed among the 100 “masters of crime” by The Times in 1998. She won the Edgar Award for Best Short Work in 2000 for “Heroes,” which first appeared in Otto Penzler’s 1999 anthology Murder and Obsession. A 2009 documentary called Anne Perry Interiors gave viewers a look into her world.

At the 2009 Agatha Awards, she received a lifetime achievement award. In 2013 and 2020, she attended the Bouchercon mystery book convention as a distinguished guest of honour. As of 2014, Perry had written 11 Christmas mystery novellas, 10 additional adult novels, 20 books in the Monk series, 29 books in the Pitt series, and 3 books for young adults.
