On Friday, a federal jury found Anton “Tony” Lazzaro, a former top fundraiser and political operative for the Minnesota Republican Party, guilty of all charges of trafficking five females between the ages of 15 and 16. After a trial that was highlighted by Lazzaro, 32, taking the stand in his defence, the jury started deliberating on Friday afternoon. Lazzaro claimed he did not pay for sex or the recruitment of young companions, even after later admitting he had intercourse with all of the girls. After only approximately two hours of discussion, the jury of six men and six women returned with a guilty decision.
The mandatory minimum sentence for Lazzaro is 10 years. The United States Attorney for Minnesota, Andrew Luger, later stated that prosecutors will pursue a “strenuous punishment,” but he did not provide further details. Authorities claim Lazzaro met his co-defendant Gisela Castro Medina on the dating website SeekingArrangement, which pairs up generally affluent men with younger partners. They claim he then paid her to find him, additional sex partners, including the five alleged victims who gave evidence against him. Lazzaro argued that the website was no different from other dating sites and denied having a contract with Castro Medina, who was then 18 years old, to find ladies for him.
Lazzaro had “all the trappings of luxury,” according to assistant US attorney Melinda Williams, but he desired more and devised a scheme to procure sex from minors. She referred to Lazzaro as a “predator” and reminded the jury that sexual consent is not a valid defence to charges of human trafficking under federal law. Daniel Gerdts, the defence attorney, maintained that most trafficking victims do not gain monetarily. He added that Lazzaro did not have the kind of control over the accused victims typical in trafficking cases and provided money and presents to persons with whom he had never had sex.
But, Judge Patrick Schiltz made it clear in his jury instructions that Lazzaro did not need to have power over the accused victims to get them to participate in sex trafficking. Lazzaro acknowledged throughout the trial having sex with a 16-year-old girl Castro Medina had brought to his condo in the city. This was the young person named Victim A by the prosecution in court papers. The woman, now 19 years old, gave a Monday deposition against Lazzaro. Lazzaro claimed that although he had given her money to purchase a phone, he had grown increasingly concerned about supporting her drug usage. He denied paying the teen for sexual services.
