Ben Abbatangelo News
The best birthday present for a young cricketer is being selected for the national team.
Ben Abbatangelo of Northcote, who turned 21 on the same day he was named captain of the National Indigenous Development Squad, had two extra reasons to rejoice.
From September 13 to September 19 in Darwin, the team will compete in Twenty20 and one-day matches against teams from the ICC East Asia Pacific, Papua New Guinea, and the Northern Territory.
The cricket skill in Australia’s indigenous communities is gradually becoming more known, according to Abbatangelo, a South Morang resident.
It is gradually beginning to receive greater attention in its own right, as it should, according to Abbatangelo.
Some young men are rising through the ranks. Josh Lalor from New South Wales has been exceptional; he truly sets the bar high.
“Guys are training with the state squads in the academies all around the states.
“I predict that we’ll hopefully have a few more boys contracted within the next few years.”
Cricket, according to Abbatangelo, is equally as significant as football, which is often regarded as Australia’s indigenous sport and is played in some of the most isolated places in the nation.
In general, he remarked, “I just think sport is really important for any sort of community.”
“Cricket is beginning to fill the void left by football.
“Most Australians are born with a passion for football, and cricket is a really special sport.
“It’s slowly getting out there, Cricket Australia is doing a good job (of (promoting) it.”
Abbatangelo claimed that in the past, he had embraced the opportunity to discover more about his ancestry.
He explained, “It’s through mum’s side of the family.”
“I’ve always known about my past and such things since I was a young child, but I really dug into it when I got to high school.
“I’ve definitely embraced it; it’s a part of who I am.
“Since you are who you are, there is nothing to be embarrassed of or to hide.
“I’m happy about that,”
The middle-order batsman has been playing for Darwin District Cricket Association team Waratah with Northcote skipper Steven Taylor for the past four months, averaging 37.5 in Premier Grade.
He was named one of the upcoming cricket stars of Victoria after leading the state’s Imparja Cup side and earning a rookie deal with the Melbourne Stars for the 2017 Big Bash season.
I’m only concentrating on consistency, he declared.
“The bigger the steps I’ll be able to take, the more constant I can be.
I would love to hold onto my rookie (place) with the Stars and possibly break in and play a few Futures League games this year.
Prior to the 2014–15 Premier Cricket season, Abbatangelo is set to re-join the Dragons the following month.
