In addition, Lakeside was the competition’s primary sponsor from 2004 through 2019 and once more in 2022. And the entire darts community joined together to bid Potter a heartfelt farewell on social media.

“It was sad to learn about Bob Potter’s demise today. RIP to The Home of World Darts’ proprietor. At this time, our thoughts are with his family and friends, as one supporter posted on social media. Weird news. A man who is crucial to the darts story. Legend. The birthplace of global darts” said another. “If it wasn’t for Bob, there wouldn’t be Lakeside and no history,” a third supporter continued, while a fourth added the succinct but moving comment, “Very sad news. Take it easy, sir.

Huw Ware, a darts official, also issued a statement that read, “Dad to hear the passing of Bob Potter. He put up a lot of effort and was always gracious. His location is well-known, and he was crucial to the success of the BDO World Championship. RIP.” Potter bought what is now known as Lakeside Country Club in 1972 while it was still known as “Wharfenden House.” The local hall was later expanded to hold 1000 people, initially as a venue for comedians and musicians.

But over time, it rose to prominence as one of the most recognisable darts venues in the world and stayed as such for more than 30 years. The agency that oversees darts released a statement saying, “The World Darts Federation are deeply saddened to learn that Bob Potter OBE passed away earlier today at the age of 94.”

We hope to carry on his legacy at the venue for at least the next three years, they continued. The WDF family is grieving Bob’s loved ones at this difficult time, and we want to send our heartfelt sympathies to them.
