Breanna Gill News
The Australian Women’s Classic golf tournament, which was played this past weekend at the Bonvile Golf Resort in New South Wales, was won by a transgender man.
Breanna Gill, a transgender man, stole a trophy for women’s professional golf and a sizable financial award. Although the WPGA Tour of Australia claimed it was Gill’s first professional victory, he has previously dominated events. The New Zealand Professional Women Golfers Trust Pro-Am champion for 2019 was Gill.
After winning the Pro-Am championship at the New Caledonia Deva Golf Resort the year before, in 2018, Gill was dubbed the “first woman” to win an official women’s professional golf tournament conducted in the South Pacific Islands.
The WPGA Tour of Australasia tweeted several pictures of Gill clutching the trophy and even changed the image in their Twitter account header to a picture of Gill, but they received a deluge of negative feedback from people who were upset that a man was allowed to compete in a women’s tournament.
Some mentioned Danni Vasquez, the female golfer who finished in second place, as the competition’s “real winner.” Vasquez and Gill played well together, and a sudden death playoff between them eventually decided the match’s outcome.
As criticism poured in, the WPGA Tour of Australasia promptly disabled their answers area to avoid further public commentary. Before the tweet’s setting was altered, users may slyly reply, but WPGA Tour of Australasia has since “hidden” all of those users’ remarks.
“Why are male athletes permitted in women’s sports? One of the few individuals who had been able to write comments previous to WPGA Tour of Australasia cutting them off was Haringey ReSisters, who questioned why a woman had been defrauded of her award.
“This is cheating; you’re allowing a person with a known physical advantage over women to steal their trophies and reward money!” In a quote-retweet, Olympian Sharron Davies added, “It’s sex discrimination [and] disgusting disparity in sport, a physical activity.
Riley Gaines, a WPGA Tour of Australasia critic and outstanding All-American swimmer, called attention to Gill’s trophy-kissing photo while serving as a spokesperson for the Independent Women’s Forum.
Women’s sporting events have grown to be a significant topic in the discussion of gender ideology and how it affects women.
Once Lia Thomas, a transgender male swimmer, started breaking women’s records and taking home gold meant for female competitors in 2021, the topic gained more attention from the general public. Since then, there have been other occasions where transgender male athletes have won medals in competitions for women. But there have also been numerous instances of pushback by female athletes and their sympathisers.
