Brendan Whitworth, the CEO of Anheuser-Busch, finally spoke out on Friday after an anti-trans backlash was sparked by a partnership between Bud Light and TikTok celebrity Dylan Mulvaney.
Whitworth said in a statement that he wants every person who drinks Bud Light to feel proud of the firm’s beer. “As the CEO of a company founded in America’s heartland more than 165 years ago, I am responsible for ensuring every consumer feels proud of the beer we brew,” Whitworth said. Whitworth, however, never made direct reference to Bud Light, the company’s association with Mulvaney, or the ensuing controversy with anti-trans protestors.
“We never intended to participate in a debate that separates people. We are in the business of fostering relationships between individuals over beers, according to the statement.
Mulvaney, a 21-year-old trans woman and influencer, drank Bud Light from a beer can with her face on it in an Instagram video she shared on April 1 for her nearly 2 million followers. She advertised the March Madness competition for the business in the video, using the hashtag #budlightpartner in the caption.
