Investigative reporter Bronagh Munro had to eat, sleep, and breathe the case of missing person Damien Nettles for more than three months.
Being from a small island with a strong feeling of community, I am aware of how devastating it is when a young child goes missing. It has a significant impact on residents in addition to the family. No one can merely vanish into thin air without leaving a trail, yet Damien certainly seemed to have done so.
There were several rumours that he had merely fallen into the water. I read through the news articles, but his family seemed unreceptive to this viewpoint.
I kept reading about how happy Damien was, and how much he enjoyed life. He didn’t seem to have any reason to flee. There was just something off.
Damien’s mother Valerie Nettles anguish and annoyance when I first called her left a lasting impression on me. I immediately liked and responded to the resolve and tenacity that lay beneath the pain.
She was a fighter, and I knew that until she learned what had happened to her kid, she would not be able to move on with her own life. She was stuck in the middle. I desired to assist her. I believed I could. But I was well aware of the challenge that lay ahead. I would have struggled to choose a more difficult scenario.
Historical cases as they are known today struggle to hold people’s attention when they are constantly exposed to media stories of new crimes. I was aware that my team and I had an uphill struggle ahead of us.
