Bruce Brown News

For the entirety of his NBA career, Bruce Brown has been ignored. He was selected by the Pistons in the second round in the 2018 NBA Draught, then two years later, he was traded out of Detroit for another second-round pick.

The Nuggets probably won’t be able to match Bruce Brown’s payday because of his excellent play.

With the Brooklyn Nets, he thrived in an unusual capacity, but his tenure in Brooklyn came to an end when Ben Simmons was acquired to fill a more expensive version of the same function. The free-agent market for him was weak. When he accepted Denver’s taxpayer mid-level exception last season, 31 players made more money overall than he did on the free market.

This acquisition appears to be among the greatest signings from the previous summer. Brown, a Swiss Army wing who has filled almost every position for the Nuggets at some time this season, has emerged as Denver’s top backup. Michael Malone can increase his playing time and switch to playing Michael Porter Jr. at forward when he is struggling, as he was in Games 2 and 3 of the NBA Finals.

Brown serves as the coach’s backup point guard and shot creator when he needs to rest both Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic at once. He can even serve as an offensive centre, as he demonstrated in Brooklyn, and excels at doing so when deployed as a ball-screener out of the short-roll.

Almost any NBA non-center can be credibly defended by the 6-foot-4 Brown. On a low volume, he has developed into a reliable shooter who is league average. He is an underestimated playmaker, a deceptively dangerous driver, and an excellent offensive rebounder for his height. For under $6.5 million this season, the Nuggets shouldn’t have had access to this kind of player.

If there was any lingering doubt that he would receive a wage increase this offseason, Game 4 of the NBA Finals put an end to it. Brown stepped up and scored 11 of his 21 points to help secure the Nuggets’ 108-95 victory that brought the Heat to the verge of elimination while Nikola Jokic was out for the majority of the fourth quarter due to foul trouble. While Brown’s destiny as an ex-Nugget may have been sealed by that outstanding run, it may also have effectively cemented Denver’s first championship.
