Carin Leon News

Carin León wants to cease referring to all Mexican musical styles by the same catch-all phrase. The Mexican superstar declared on Friday, July 21, that he is in charge of the F*ck Regional movement.

Mexican regional music has long been used to describe a variety of musical styles with Mexican roots. People have argued for changing that catch-all name to msica Mexicana in recent years to demonstrate how popular Mexican music has become worldwide. Best Regional Mexican Music Album (Including Tejano) will be modified to Best Msica Mexicana Album (Including Tejano) at the 2024 Grammy Awards. León, however, still considers it restricting to group musical forms like mariachi, ranchero, corridos, and banda music under one umbrella term.

León is the driving force behind the F*ck Regional movement, which aims to demonstrate that Mexican music has outgrown being lumped into one category. He is a supporter of appreciating the variety of Mexican musical traditions, including mariachi, banda, and corridos. In a video, he described the movement’s mission statement.

He says in Spanish, “We don’t fit in that category [regional Mexican]. We are greater than that. We are a band. This is corrido. We play mariachi. We are a movement, a flavor, and a feeling. countless shades and emotions. Always chingones, sometimes good or not so good. Regional? F*ck that.

León is also the movement’s leader since he considers the “regional” label to be restrictive. Since Mexican music has become internationally popular due to the popularity of musicians like him, Peso Pluma, Grupo Frontera, Christian Nodal, Junior H, and Natanael Cano, there is nothing distinctively localized about it. Every individual and every ensemble represents a unique Mexican style and sound.

He continues, “We’re a musical revolution.” They pay attention to us all around the world, including in skyscrapers in Tokyo, barrios in Puerto Rico, hills in Colombia, gringo schools, and Mexican streets. We have a storied that hasn’t ended after a century. We are a group. We are a community with a history of revolt. Carin León’s most recent album, Colmillo de Leche, was released in May. His hit song “Ni Me Debes Ni Te Debo,” which featured Colombian pop sensation Camilo, was featured on the album.
