Following months of discussion, the institution decided to gradually raise RAs’ salary to reflect the cost of housing by the 2024–2025 academic year. Using the increased RA compensation as a starting point, the institution will also make pay adjustments for other ResLife student staff roles.
Following staff agitation for increased pay during the previous academic year, adjustments were made. The Vice President for Student Affairs Smita Ruzicka and Dean of Students Derek Doucet informed The Campus that they were already working behind the scenes to raise ResLife pay before they were contacted by students.
According to AJ Place, associate dean of student life, ResLife’s salary has increased “nearly annually” since 2016. According to Place, “these most recent revisions will assist us in reaching the compensation level of the room cost for RAs, which is the benchmark used by many schools.” “Relative to the RA levels, the other position compensation levels were set.”
Starting with the 2024–25 academic year, RA pay will equal $9,600, which is the cost of a room. Consequently, the remuneration for Head RAs is $12,750, Feb RAs are paid $4,800, and Community Assistants (CAs) are paid $4,000, according to an email Doucet issued to the students pushing for better pay in May 2022. To bring compensation closer to the cost of housing, ResLife workers got pay increases for the 2022–2023 academic year and will receive additional increases for the 2023–2024 academic year.
The ResLife student-staff who contacted administrators to request a wage raise believed that previous pay rates for ResLife positions did not adequately compensate them for the work they conducted as student leaders. Kamryn You Mak ’23 stated, “I was disappointed and started talking to peers to see what we could do. You Mak and other ResLife staff members wrote a letter to top leadership outlining the major justifications they thought ResLife staff should receive a pay raise.
“Over the course of the academic year, students come to us for assistance first when they have questions about their classes, issues with registration, conflicts with their roommates and friends, or sentiments of homesickness., or simply need someone to talk to. Although the majority of this work cannot be measured, the people and Middlebury community will benefit greatly from it, the students stated.
The letter also discussed the time commitment and sacrifice ResLife staff make by giving up their weekends and the increasing responsibility ResLife staff had assumed throughout Covid-19.
