Story of Girl in the Basement
The Fritzl case first gained attention in 2008 when a woman by the name of Elisabeth Fritzl claimed to have spent 24 years being held captive by her father, Josef Fritzl, to Austrian police officials. When she was imprisoned in a secret location in the basement of their family house, Josef used to assault, abuse her sexually, and even commit multiple acts of rape.
Elisabeth was forced to give birth to seven children as a result, of which three stayed imprisoned with their mother, three were raised by Fritzl and his wife, Rosemarie, and one infant passed away too soon just a few days after delivery.
Josef was detained by police officers on suspicion of wrongful detention, rape, and other offences under the penal code as a result of Elisabeth’s allegation. In March 2009, the court sentenced him to life in prison after finding him guilty on all counts. Josef Fritzl and Rosemarie Fritzl welcomed Elisabeth into the world in Austria in 1966. 3 brothers and 3 sisters made up her 6 siblings.
She first experienced violence from her father in 1977, when she was just 11 years old. When Elisabeth was 15 and had finished school, she began preparing to work as a waitress.
In 1983, she then fled her house and went into hiding in Vienna with a friend. Within 20 days, police located her and gave her back to her parents. Later, she returned to her waitressing course and finished it so she could apply for a job in the nearest city.
Less than a year following his arrest, Josef entered a guilty plea to charges of murder for his carelessness in relation to Michael’s passing, as well as to charges related to the enslavement, incest, rape, coercion, and false imprisonment of Elisabeth. He was given a life sentence at Garsten Abbey, and he is still there as of this writing.

Where is Elizabeth Fritzl now?
Elisabeth Fritzl, according to the Mirror, was given a new identity following the trial to protect her privacy. She currently resides with her six children in an unnamed Austrian hamlet referred to in the media as “Village X.”
According to a 2019 story by the Mirror, “The children, now between the ages of 17 and 31, sleep in rooms with doors always open after going through weekly therapy sessions to erase the traumas they sustained inside the cellar.” Their two-story family home is constantly monitored by CCTV and guards, and any strangers found loitering around may expect to be apprehended by authorities in a matter of minutes.
Fritzl apparently has a relationship with Thomas Wagner, her former bodyguard and the person who currently resides with her and her family.
