Jacinta Price or Kerrynne Liddle are likely to receive a promotion from Peter Dutton to assume portfolio responsibility for Indigenous Australians. The position could be reduced to a shadow assistant ministerial position, though.
Peter Dutton, the leader of the opposition, is thinking about how to replace Julian Leeser, who resigned as the shadow attorney general and minister for Indigenous Australians on Tuesday.
The two Indigenous members of the Coalition, Price and Liddle, were previously seen to be front-runners for the position of minister for Indigenous Australians. Some argued that Price’s promotion would strengthen the National Party’s position in the cabinet.
However, Price is believed to have told some of her coworkers that she agreed that it would be too early in her federal political career for her to hold the position of minister without any subordinates.
The promotion of either MP to the shadow cabinet, according to sources, is improbable because they are both first-term senators who have never had shadow ministerial positions and because an early promotion may incite jealously among peers in the workplace.
The alternative is to give Price or Liddle the shadow assistant ministry, with a current minister like Anne Ruston serving as the Indigenous Australians’ representative.
The attorney general position is anticipated to go to an attorney already serving in cabinet, such as Michaelia Cash, Paul Fletcher, or Michael Sukkar, in order to lessen the impact of the reorganisation.
Due to their smaller current responsibilities, Cash, the shadow minister for employment and workplace relations, and Fletcher, the shadow minister for science, the arts, government services, and the digital economy, are seen as the more likely candidates.
Given that Sukkar is in charge of social services, the National Disability Insurance Scheme, housing, and homelessness, giving him the attorney general’s position may only be feasible if a larger reorganisation is planned.
Price accompanied Dutton this week on a tour of Alice Springs and promoted the idea of calling the Australian Federal Police “to lend a hand” in the Northern Territory. Locals, according to Price, had “almost lost hope,” had become “desensitised,” and others had said that “the territory is now a failed state.”
“Sexual abuse is a really serious crime, which has a devastating impact on children, families, and communities,” said Catherine Liddle, chief executive of SNAICC, an organisation that fights for Indigenous children. “This is not a political football,” she said.
