Charles Larkey News

On Wednesday, the American singer-songwriter Carole King turned 80. She is the focus of a full-length documentary this evening and is regarded as one of the most famous and influential musicians in history. After Carole King: Natural Woman airs tonight at 9 o’clock on BBC Two, there will be archival footage of her singing in a BBC live studio performance. Her career has spanned an amazing eight decades, starting off as one of the staff songwriters at the Brill Building before becoming a solo performer.

They wrote songs like The Loco-Motion, which Kylie Minogue released as her debut single, and Chains, which the Beatles subsequently covered. The first of Carole’s four marriages, Gerry, gave birth to two children: Louise and Sherry.

But in 1968, they got divorced. In her book A Natural Woman: A Memoir, published in 2021, Carole discussed a “pattern” she noticed in her prior romantic relationships.

I learned as a child that it was easier to take strong, steady action towards a goal with a guy to help me get there because of my strong will, and desire to please my father and my father’s success in getting things done.

Carole met her second husband Charles Larkey not long before she recorded her debut solo album in 1970. He contributed the bass guitar to several of Carole’s early singles and the two of them performed as a musical trio called “The City,” which released one album.

Levi, born in 1974, and Molly, born in 1971, were their only children together, but by 1976, they had already divorced.

They separated up, according to Carole, because “he was living the life of a musician and I was living the life of a domestic housewife, and ultimately it wasn’t working,” she said in a 2012 interview with the Kennedy Library Foundation.

For her 1977 album Simple Things, Carole worked with lyricist Rick Evers. They got hitched soon after that. In her story, Carole claimed that Rick had a short fuse and grew more abusive over time. In one instance, she recalled, “Without warning, he struck with his right fist, he hit me hard as if he were in a boxing ring, except he wasn’t wearing gloves and he wasn’t in a boxing ring.”
