Who is Charlotte Danielson?
Charlotte began her career as a teacher in Washington, D.C., more than 50 years ago, teaching a mixed-age class of first and second graders. From her very first year of teaching, she recognized the importance of encouraging students’ innate intellectual curiosity and creating the ideal environment for them to engage with important concepts and subjects. After working as a teacher, program director, staff growth director, and evaluation architect for around 25 years, she put pen to paper and wrote Enhancing Professional Practise: A Framework for Teaching.
The most popular instructional framework in the US is now the Danielson Framework, as it has come to be known. In 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and 12 other countries—including Canada, Colombia, Lebanon, Spain, Chile, and Thailand—she and her colleagues have worked with educators utilizing the framework.
Charlotte is a recognized authority on teacher effectiveness on a global scale. She provides guidance to national ministries and departments of education as well as state education departments. She is sought after as a keynote speaker for regional, national, and worldwide conferences as well as a policy advisor to governmental and administrative entities. She has written extensively about the use of her framework and associated facets of the instructional and professional practice of teaching. She has written about, among other things, setting up schools for student success (Enhancing Student Achievement: a Framework for School Improvement, 2002), teacher leadership (Teacher Leadership that Strengthens the Profession, 2006), professional conversations (Talk about Teaching! Conducting Professional Conversations, 2009), as well as a number of useful tools and training programs, both in-person and online, to help practitioners implement significant ideas about tea.
She holds degrees in history from Cornell University, philosophy, politics, and economics from Oxford University, and educational administration and supervision from Rutgers University. She has worked as a curriculum director and staff development director, and she is the founder and board chair of The Danielson Group. She has taught at all levels, from kindergarten through university.
