I anticipated Cleve West’s studio to be bustling with desks, to-do lists, and ringing phones because he is one of the most admired and prominent garden designers in the UK and the winner of seven gold medals and two Best in Show gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Rather, Cleve takes me downstairs to a room in the basement that has a single drawing board, a computer screen, and a plan chest. Only the flint fragments on the windowsill and a framed embroidered rose—a gold medal winner for one of his early RHS Hampton Court Show gardens—serve as decorations.
This humble, self-deprecating designer has always preferred to work in this manner. “I don’t want the responsibility of an office full of people,” he says. I think of myself as a bit of a control freak as well. He really means that he is a perfectionist who must be involved in each phase of the design process. He has been creating private gardens since 1990, so at this point in his career, he can, for the most part, pick his clients. “I try to work with clients who share my values, who care about the environment and who are interested in the process of creating a garden rather than having it as a showpiece,” the client said. However, one drawback to managing a single studio is that
Cleve attempted to become a teacher in London while studying art and physical education, but he lacked the patience necessary. He learned about hard landscaping from a coach at his athletics club who later became a lifelong friend and was a licenced landscaper.
The young Cleve soon became involved in garden maintenance because he was also assisting an aunt with maintaining her sizable garden. He discovered that he truly enjoyed working outside and still does; he resents being in his office when he can see a blue sky through the window.
Together with the sculptor Johnny Woodford, he created the first show gardens that had architectural features, unusual plants, and eccentric pieces of art. “It was an exciting period because we were expressing ourselves and experimenting.
It was a little bit like gardening during the punk era. Cleve’s designs were popularised by Chelsea, where he also developed his skill of fine, unhurried planting, exquisitely detailed hard landscaping, and striking sculptural components. Cleve found the flexibility to try new things to be appealing.
