Colin Allred News

On Wednesday morning, Texas Democratic Rep. Colin Allred declared his intention to run for the US Senate, taking on incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. “Our senator doesn’t have to make us feel bad. In his introductory video, Allred remarked, “We can get a new one.

Since his first election in 2018, when he defeated GOP incumbent Rep. Pete Sessions, Allred has served as the representative for Texas’ 32nd Congressional District. He is a former NFL player and former employee of the Obama administration. Before the seat became less competitive after the most recent round of redistricting, he won two close races there.

Allred is a skilled fund-raiser as well; according to Federal Election Commission records, he had about $2 million in cash on hand by the end of 2022. Cruz’s campaign committee had a balance of $3.3 million in cash on hand at the end of 2022; he will need those kinds of resources during his 2024 campaign.

During his 2018 reelection campaign, Cruz faced a strong battle from Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke. Cruz ultimately prevailed by less than 3 percent in the reliably conservative state. In the highly publicised race, O’Rourke broke fundraising records, ultimately losing but inspiring state Democrats in the process.

Cruz is running for re-election to the Senate for a third time after deciding against running for president again after placing second in the 2016 Republican primary. Cruz responded “I’m running for reelection to the Senate” in February when asked if he will make another run for the White House, despite Texas law permitting a candidate to run for both the Senate and president at the same time.

“Democrats have once more chosen a fanatic on the far left to run for Senate. Colin Allred not only always votes with Nancy Pelosi, but his voting record is totally out-of-touch with Texas,’ a Cruz spokesperson said in a statement after Allred made his declaration.

Allred must win the Democratic primary, which might be close, in order to challenge Cruz. Roland Gutierrez, a state senator from the town of Uvalde, has also declared publicly that he is considering running. Additionally, Sylvester Turner, the departing mayor of Houston, has been suggested as a potential contender.
