De Sousa was given a sentence of 10 months in federal prison, followed by a year of supervised release, after entering a guilty plea to the accusations leveled against him. In addition, the court mandated that he do 100 hours of community service and pay the full amount of taxes that he owes the government.
De Sousa began serving his sentence in a federal prison in Fairton, New Jersey, in May 2019, more than a year after he submitted his resignation. He was imprisoned for 275 days before being freed on November 11, 2020. De Sousa probably settled down in Baltimore, Maryland after being freed. In 2021, he published a memoir of his experience behind bars.
