In the 1980s, LaChapelle was associated with the 303 Gallery, which also included works by artists such Doug Aitken and Karen Kilimnik. LaChapelle received a job offer from Interview magazine after people from the publication viewed his display of work.
LaChapelle first met Andy Warhol when he was 17 years old, who then recruited him as a photographer for Interview. It is said that Warhol told LaChapelle, “Do anything you want. Just be certain that everyone looks well. During this time, LaChapelle was friends with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.
