David Rathband News
The day after Raoul Moat fled after shooting Samantha Stobbart and Chris Brown, traffic police officer David Rathband, 42, was seated in his patrol car close to East Denton, Tyne and Wear. Twelve minutes after Moat had called 999 to declare war on the police that day, the police officer was shot in the face as he approached Rathband’s car.”I observed nothing—no emotion—as I gazed into his eyes. Then I experienced severe facial agony,” Rathband told The Sun. “I knew my eye had just vanished and my right eye socket had exploded.
When David Rathband was transported to Newcastle General Hospital, his head and upper torso had suffered serious wounds. Moat contacted the police once more only 50 minutes later, disregarding the policeman, according to The Guardian. Rathband was hospitalised for 17 days. More than 200 shotgun pellets remained in his skull, and he lost vision in both of his eyes.
Sadly, David never recovered from his wounds, and he acknowledged having had suicide thoughts a year after the shooting. He stated in an interview that “I’m not a robot, I have been severely affected by what’s happened” (via The Sun). I have to wait and see, but as long as I’m confident enough to keep going.
David Rathband was discovered hanging at his Blyth home on February 29, 2012, about 18 months after being shot by Moat. He later divorced his wife Kath, with whom he had two children.
He claimed that David frequently complained to him that the [police] service was forcing him to jump through hoops after being shot. “They battled one other for his money. They refused to pay for the particular cane he required to walk. After being shot, he required dental care, but they weren’t willing to cover the cost. I think that waiting over a year for any kind of specialised counselling contributed to his eventual collapse and suicide.
“We are committed to offering support to any officers who sustain injuries while performing their duties.”
Prior to his departure from the UK, David had visited Darren, who had relocated to Australia in 2008. Before leaving, David had sent out some unsettling tweets, including one that read: “Lost my sight, my career, my wife and my marriage… I’m leaving for my return on Monday and will say farewell to my kids.
