Deborah Cowley Wikipedia, Books, Born, Genre, Drawing, Awards – Deborah Cowley, an Ottawa-based journalist, travelled to Ghana in Africa in 2000 to research Kathy Knowles, the Winnipeg-born creator of the OSU Children’s Library Fund.
Cowley claims that she couldn’t stop thinking about her initial article she wrote about Knowles for Reader’s Digest. She consequently made the decision to forego her journalism career in favour of volunteering for the initiative.
The Library Tree: How a Canadian Woman Brought the Joy of Reading to a Generation of African Children was written by Cowley sixteen years later. She’ll be in Winnipeg on Thursday night to tell her tale.
In Africa, Knowles had first begun by reading to a small group of kids in her yard. That amount quickly increased to 70. She was forced to convert her garage into the first of many libraries in underdeveloped communities.
“Knowles realised that schools weren’t giving kids the necessities. The rooms were cramped, there were no books, and they weren’t being taught to read. She was also altering that, according to Cowley.
She continued, “Her libraries have done more than just help kids learn to read. “They offer so much more than I could possibly list,” I said. The difficulty of staffing the libraries has been significant and persists now.
Kathy insisted on receiving written authorization from the local government before agreeing to pay the staff members’ salaries, according to Cowley.
“The librarians are the ones that draw the kids in, make them feel welcome, and teach them how to read. They are crucial.”The librarians are the ones that draw the kids in, make them feel welcome, and teach them how to read. They are crucial.
Cowley has met so many kids who have benefited from these libraries throughout her 15 years of witnessing and working on the project.
After his parents passed away, Martin moved to the south to live with his brother. By secondary school, they were broke, she claimed.
Because of his exceptionality and talent, he was given a scholarship to attend high school. Since then, he has accomplished remarkable things, like writing plays and instructing younger kids. Moreover, he has authored 17 plays.
In Accra, the capital of Ghana, there are already seven libraries, and in the spring of 2014, the OSU Children’s Library Fund will open its eighth children’s community library. The project will be the biggest thus far.
