Another indication that the infrastructure for former President Donald Trump’s as-yet-unannounced 2024 presidential campaign is growing is the fact that Erin Perrine, who served as the press communications director for the former president’s 2020 campaign, has joined a super PAC backing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Perrine will serve as the “Never Back Down” PAC’s director of communications. Ken Cuccinelli, the former president’s top homeland security official, is the organization’s leader.
According to two sources familiar with the governor’s strategy, this group has been pushing for DeSantis to run for president, and it is expected to be the principal outside super PAC behind a prospective DeSantis run.
Perrine held the position of communications director for Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz after serving as the country’s spokesperson for the 2020 Trump campaign. Two of the most well-known former Trump advisers or representatives trying to assist DeSantis are Cuccinelli and Perrine. At this time, the governor of Florida appears to be Trump’s most formidable prospective Republican primary challenger in 2024.
“Erin joining Never Back Down solidifies our ability to effectively spread our message and expand our movement. She will be instrumental in ensuring that we elect Gov. Ron DeSantis to the White House, according to the PAC’s executive director Chris Jankowski.
According to a Republican insider with intimate knowledge of the action earlier this week, veteran GOP strategist Jeff Roe was also hired as an adviser to the super PAC.
Roe served as the campaign manager for Cruz’s successful presidential bid in 2016 and was a significant advisor on Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin’s winning bid in 2021.
The PAC’s new hiring coincides with DeSantis’ upcoming travels in April for his book tour and several speaking engagements with regional GOP organizations. In addition to Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, and the Washington, D.C., region, he is anticipated to travel to South Carolina, and Nevada, each of which is significant early presidential primary state.
DeSantis indicated to British journalist Piers Morgan on Tuesday to “stay tuned” when asked if he would run for president in 2024, but he added that he has not yet made up his mind. According to two people familiar with his team’s private discussions, DeSantis has suggested in private chats with funders and allies that he is leaning towards a 2024 run but will make a final decision once his legislature session concludes in early May.
“I’ve let people know that I have a lot of work to do over the upcoming months in Florida. We’re going to score a tonne of points, and then we’ll see how things shake out,” DeSantis said to Morgan.
On Friday, DeSantis signed eight measures into law, one of which was intended at restricting the amount of damages that businesses and property owners have to pay when they are sued. The Tallahassee GOP supermajority is already debating legislation that would outlaw abortions after six weeks, permit unlicensed concealed carry of firearms, and extend the state’s ban on teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity to students in eighth grade and below.
DeSantis responded affirmatively when asked by Morgan if he thinks he has what it takes to be president.
“What it takes is to have a vision for the nation, the capacity to lead, the willingness to stand in that fire when it gets really, very hot, and the ability to not buckle under duress. And I believe I have them all,” he said.
