Helen Mcginn News
In a moving passage from her latest book, Helen McGinn portrays a woman burning a church candle in honour of her brother. Hearts stay broken, she adds quietly as she turns to face the woman sitting next to her.
International wine expert Helen, who frequently appears on television’s Saturday Morning Kitchen, is all too familiar with this. “I think it is probably one of the truest things someone can say about losing someone,” she remarks as she turns to look at her hands.
“Your life may improve, sentiments may lessen in intensity, and memories may fade a little. Your heart, however, never fully recovers. What’s possible? Her work, In Just One Day, explores what happens after Flora, the main heroine of the story, loses her brother in a horrific tragedy.
It takes an unflinching look at how such a catastrophe affects people left behind and how everything in your life may fall apart in a single split second. In January 2002, Helen, who lives in the New Forest, experienced that moment.
One of the first carjacking victims in the UK was her brother Tim Robinson, who was only 25 years old. Outside Tim’s London home, a teenager attempting to steal his car was stabbed seven times. Tim was in the hospital with his family by his side while surgeons fought to save him.
He was just the most beautiful, amazing younger brother you could have, Helen, grins at the mention of Tim. Tim simply adored life. We had a blast as children growing up in the New Forest with our sister Alex. Tim never stopped laughing or making jokes, even as an adult. He had a mop of hair, was over 6 feet tall, and had a fantastic smile.
It took 20 years to compose this novel. However, she can still clearly recall the terrible moment when she learned that Tim had been attacked, as well as the day he passed away.
There is always a lot of frenzy and shouting whenever I watch someone die in a TV drama or a movie. But it wasn’t at all like that. There was only complete shock and disbelief when Tim passed away. We were all very cold. That really challenged me.
