A kid has been arrested for sexually assaulting a student who wrote an open letter about her experience. Ione Wells, a 20-year-old student at Oxford University, was attacked last month as she went home in the Camden area. The unidentified 17-year-old received a two-year youth detention sentence at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court.
Following his admission of sexual assault at an earlier hearing, he was told he would serve the first half of his sentence on probation. The adolescent will also spend five years on the list of sex offenders. He allegedly grabbed Ms. Wells from behind during the hearing and shoved her to the ground, where she struck her head on the concrete.
He then violently grabbed her chest, ripping her bra in half. Ms. Wells described the attack as the most horrific event of her life and how it left her feeling “tainted and violated” in a victim impact statement. She claimed to have experienced flashbacks and heard footsteps.
The 17-year-old’s defence attorney offered some leniency, saying the young man “deeply regrets” the assault and was “willing to prove” it would be his last.
However, the judge determined that a time of custody was necessary because the attack was so terrible and would have long-term psychological effects on Ms. Wells.
The indignant letter to her attacker was first published by Ms. Wells in the student newspaper the Cherwell after she forfeited her right to remain anonymous in order to discuss the attack. She claimed that the supportive comments she got in return “transformed” a “incredibly hurtful” experience.
She stated: “My community will not feel that it is unsafe for us to walk home after dark.” We won’t accept or buy into the notion that taking the final Tube home puts us in danger.
