The good news is that because the story is luckily not based on true events, fans won’t have to worry about having to flee from Leatherface anytime soon.
However, a few true events—most notably the serial murderer Ed Gein, who is believed to be responsible for a series of killings in Wisconsin in the middle of the 1950s—served as the inspiration for the first movie and the design of Leatherface.
Gein and Leatherface have a lot in common, including the fact that both of them kept gruesome memorabilia in their houses and donned human skin masks. Instead of using a chainsaw, Gein shot his victims with a handgun.
Gein is mentioned in American Psycho, and two other well-known movie villains, Norman Bates from Psycho and Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs, were also modeled after him.
While claiming that Elmer Wayne Henley, another murderer, served as his inspiration, Kim Henkel, who co-wrote the first film and is a producer on the second, recently stated that he “definitely studied Gein.”
Elmer Wayne was reportedly cited as saying, “I did these crimes, and I’m going to stand up and take it like a man,” in a news report in 2004.I found it remarkable that he continued to follow traditional morals at the time.
He wanted it known that after being exposed, he would conduct himself morally. So I tried to incorporate this kind of moral madness into the characters.
On the other side, Hooper’s 1972 Christmas shopping trip is where the inclusion of the chainsaw first appeared.
In a 2004 interview with Texas Monthly, he explained: “There were these huge Christmas crowds, I was frustrated, and I found myself near a display rack of chainsaws.” I simply tried to concentrate on it. I gave the saws a serious concentration and realized right away how rapidly I could get through the crowd.
“I walked home, sat down, and the entire freaking story came to me in what felt like 30 seconds. All the channels have just turned in as the zeitgeist had just passed. The hitchhiker, the older brother at the gas station, the woman who escaped twice, the dinner scenario, and the people without fuel in the countryside are just a few of the stories that were mentioned.
