Jessica Darrow, the actress from Encanto, told Deadline tonight on the Oscars red carpet, “Here I am being queer and lovely and I’m on the red carpet, and I’m extremely thrilled to represent fellow gorgeous gay people that enjoy Disney.”
When asked about Disney’s handling of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which saw CEO Bob Chapek waver and staff members walk out this past week, Darrow stated that “We are the face of Disney at the end of the day” in terms of the LGBTQIA+ community.
The actress continued, “It’s wrong what’s happening, as we continue to lift our voices, make our cases known, and continue to put forth the good, loving true energy that consumes all of us; we are the authentic part of all of this.”
She continued, “I want to let you know that it’s perfectly OK to be you. I’m trying to show up for everyone who might identify with me, for everyone who feels the same way that I do.
Disney has so far allowed me to stay true to who I am, so I’m doing all in my power to accomplish that. With my tattoos and short hair, I occasionally feel like an alt-Disney character, Darrow continued.
“I continue to do what I want, and I want everyone to continue to follow suit. I have no idea, “F dude.” Do you. Do you — not ‘F ’em Disney, I love Disney,” continued the Luisa from Encanto voice actress.
