John Della Volpe News

During his first trip to Duke, John Della Volpe, head of polling at the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics, did what he does best: spoke with young people.

Della Volpe, who most recently worked as a pollster and strategic communications advisor for President Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign, discussed what he thinks sets Generation Z apart politically at his speech on October 4. The pollster visited Duke as part of a tour of colleges he was on after the publication of his book, “Fight: How Gen Z is Channeling Their Fear and Passion to Save America,” in January 2022.

Della Volpe had lunch with the pupils to kick off his visit. Thalia Halloran, a 22-year-old associate in research for the Hart Leadership Program, was present. The Sanford School of Public Policy’s Sanford Program, a service-based organization, sponsored and promoted Della Volpe’s speech.

Since Gen Z students already make up the majority of our student body, Halloran explained, “this was the kind of thing that we thought was very relevant to our students’ interests.”

In answer to the inquiry, “Why Duke? Why now? “I think we are obviously on the cusp of a very significant election, number one,” Della Volpe declared. Second, I believe that many of the generalisations made about Generation Z are incorrect.

According to Della Volpe, there has been a significant shift in voting behaviour between millennials and Gen Z. She noted that when she interacted with Gen Z-ers in 2017, they had different worries and made more of an effort to vote than their more senior peers. Della Volpe highlighted the importance of the youth vote in the 2018 and 2020 elections, highlighting the fact that laws addressing climate change, gun violence, and student loan debt could not have been approved without the support of young people.

What he said made him very happy: “Politicians are really starting to get it that you guys actually have real power.”

Gen Z was described as “the most diverse generation of Americans we’ve ever seen” when the event began, but Della Volpe also remarked about how they had “been robbed of that experience of seeing America truly united.”

Della Volpe highlighted the burdens that Generation Z now carries, including the drug epidemic, environmental issues, the pandemic lockdown, and rising suicide rates. Despite this, he praised Gen Z for being resilient and driven to bring about change.
