Jonathan Hatami News
In an effort to defeat troubled District Attorney George Gascón in 2024, a deputy district attorney for Los Angeles County has declared his candidature for office.
In connection with the murders of 10-year-old Anthony Avalos and 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez, prosecutor Jonathan Hatami rose to global fame. Hatami, who too was a victim of child abuse, feels that these instances are personal to him and that these triumphs inspire him to think more broadly.
He told Eyewitness News, “I would make sure that we’re punishing significant and violent crime.” “I would ensure that everyone in Los Angeles is aware that they will be held accountable for their misdeeds. Yet, I also want to let people who are committing less serious offences know that we want to find a way for them to succeed.”
Hatami stated that he would include gun violence enhancements, send deputy district attorneys back to parole hearings, and only permit zero bails for lower-level offences on his list of priorities.
It is a clear allusion to his rival and superior, Gascón, who won office in 2020 on the platform of radical criminal justice reform. Hatami claimed that Gascón first barred prosecutors from requesting cash bail for suspects accused of nonviolent offences, which included some domestic violence and child abuse accusations.
In May 2022, in the midst of an intense recall effort, Gascón changed course and lifted the decree. However, the recall effort fell short since organisers were unable to gather enough genuine petition signatures to put the issue before voters. Following a failed first attempt in 2021, it was the second attempt to qualify for a recall election that may remove Gascón.
Hatami wrote on Twitter on Saturday: “When George Gascón ran for DA, he supported defunding the police & removing Metro & school police.” “He consistently promoted risky language, putting the lives of many cops in peril. His group referred to the police as “killers” and “barbarians.””
Disapproval still reverberates, as seen by a lawsuit Hatami filed, in which he claims Gascón discriminated against him for speaking out, denied him promotions, and defamed him.
“That is exactly how it will be. They will have to choose between Hatami and George Gascón in this matchup “said he. In response to the question of whether the case felt “too personal,” Hatami stated, “That’s why I’m running, which is independent from a lawsuit.” I don’t believe that I’m running for office because I have a particular grudge against George Gascón.
