Until recently, Kemah Bob’s primary claim to fame was that her institution was located in a city well-known for the 1993 siege of a ranch housing the headquarters of a religious cult.
Waco was a town where “nothing happened” when the Texan comedian, who is now living in London, arrived at her “private Christian University full of conservatives in the heart of Texas” when she was just a year old. Nothing. Even though, as she concedes, there was undoubtedly an abundance of material, there wasn’t a comedy club in the location.
As a result of her appearances on Sorry, I Didn’t Know and ITV2’s Stand Up Sketch Show, as well as her tours with comedians like Hannah Gadsby, Nish Kumar, Desiree Burch, and Jess Fostekew, she is now becoming more and more well-known in the London comedy scene. She is now launching her podcast after a successful run as co-host of the massive The Guilty Feminist podcast.
The Guilty Feminist team’s podcast FOC IT UP! with Kemah Bob, which celebrates and centres on the perspectives of women, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and trans-masculine comedians of colour (or, any comedian who isn’t a cis man), is based on Bob’s live show The Femmes of Color Comedy Club. After being shocked by what she calls “blatant tokenism” and a general lack of non-white performers and attendees at popular performances in London, which she found “surprising in Europe’s most diversified city,” Bob was motivated to create the organisation. She tells me when we meet that the diverse audience she caters to with both the podcast and the comedy show is “not really being taken care of by the rest of the industry.”
She says, “And I was like, hang on a second. There must be people out there who are interested in hearing from people who are similar to me and others who are not, but don’t know where to look. because we [people of colour or LGBTQ+] are frequently the only ones on the show.”
The live-recorded podcast is sort of an extension of the increasingly popular FOC night. Bob comperes, and after each featured comic performs a little act, they all join together for a lively, spontaneous conversation. The subjects mentioned range from endometriosis to “business bullsh**,” “flirtationships,” and divorce, football, and “old Scottish men.” In one especially memorable conversation, the topic of whether it’s acceptable to want a superyacht descended into a rabbit hole.
