In a very particular way, Dannielynn Birkhead is honoring her late mother Anna Nicole Smith. The 16-year-old donned a black tulle skirt and shirt with images of her mother from her well-known Guess campaign, accessorized with rhinestone heels, to the 34th annual Barnstable Brown Kentucky Derby Eve Gala on Friday night. She was accompanied by her father Larry Birkhead.
Just before the annual event, Birkhead told PEOPLE, “She’s showing her fashion sense as well as paying tribute to her mom.” “It came from a Guess collection that sold out and she [Dannielynn] saved it for a special occasion,” explains Birkhead, who was sporting a tie that complemented his daughter’s blouse. It was created using images from some of Anna’s most successful Guess campaigns.
“We’re both paying tribute because it’s the 20th anniversary of our first meeting,” says Birkhead, who first met Anna Nicole in 2003 at the Barnstable Brown Gala while covering the yearly event that benefits the Barnstable Brown Diabetes Centre at the University of Kentucky. At the time, Birkhead was a young photographer sent to cover the event.
To be completely honest, he says that it feels like yesterday. “I was hoping for a good shot as I went with my camera bags. In the end, I had so much more. How one event can completely change your life is funny. And this party helped me in that regard. How different my life would have been if I hadn’t met Anna and given birth to our baby if I hadn’t been there that night and made that connection. The father-daughter team plans to be present at Churchill Downs on Saturday for the 149th Kentucky Derby.
