Laura Jarrett News
A rising star at CNN, Laura Jarrett is prepared to step into large shoes at NBC News, taking over veteran Pete Williams’ coverage of the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Supreme Court.
According to a note from Rich Greenberg, who oversees NBC News’ investigative division and to whom Jarrett will report, Jarrett is expected to start working for the network in January as a senior legal reporter. She will report for MSNBC, NBC News Now, and NBC News Digital in addition to appearing on NBC’s flagship news programs. She is anticipated to collaborate with teams from both the investigative and Washington bureaus of NBC News.
For the last six years, Jarrett had worked for CNN, most recently as a co-anchor on the network’s early-morning show “Early Start.” Additionally, she provided legal analysis for the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the Congressional inquiries into January 6, the inquiries into former President Trump, and the legal disputes around the mandates for the Covid-19 vaccination.
Jarrett took a different route than usual to the news desk. After graduating from Harvard Legal School in 2010, she began her career as an attorney and began working for a Chicago-area legal firm. However, she had long been interested in journalism and storytelling.
In 2020, she admitted to Variety that she no longer wished to serve as an advocate. “A smart law firm associate will focus intently and relentlessly on the argument that the client wants to hear. I couldn’t stop wondering. “What do you think of this over there?” This is not logical. This story doesn’t seem to make sense. Your paying customers don’t really like those questions. They are not interested in you pointing out weaknesses in their defense.
The daughter of Valerie Jarrett, a senior government official in Chicago who later rose to become one of President Barack Obama’s most trusted advisors, Jarrett is a Harvard Law School graduate.
She is the most recent former CNN employee to join NBC News at a time when CNN’s corporate parent, Warner Bros. Discovery, is battling a directive to reduce expenses. Former CNN congressional journalist Ryan Nobles recently started working for NBC News. Rebecca Kutler, who left CNN after the corporation shut down the CNN+ streaming platform she had worked on, is now in charge of managing MSNBC’s streaming content. Veteran political producer David Gelles recently started working for NBC News as the new executive producer of ‘Meet The Press’.
Kelly O’Donnell, a seasoned Washington journalist for NBC News, will once again concentrate more intently on her White House beat responsibilities as a result of Jarrett’s hiring. After Pete Williams retired, O’Donnell began covering both the White House and the Supreme Court.
