Lecresia Campbell News
I was working on finishing a piece about an artist who, in my opinion, is the “total package” and a standout female vocalist as Gospel Music Heritage Month draws to a close. Lecresia Campbell had been my choice for the latter. I regretfully learnt about Ms. Campbell’s demise today.
She was a gift to the Body of Christ whose name is likely only familiar to fans of gospel music. Despite being well acclaimed, she received little attention as gospel music became increasingly popular. This final post of GMH Month will be dedicated to her in her honour and with deep sorrow.
It’s a personal loss. The thought of Campbell entered my head a week or so before news of her illness. Her voice in particular impressed me as a vocalist who leans towards classical music. To learn some tricks and just to hear her lovely voice again, I went to YouTube and played a number of her songs back-to-back.
Other than singing Negro Spirituals, I never really knew what to do with my voice in the gospel industry. For Black performers with an operatic tone, spirituals performed on special occasions or in theatre plays provided a secure environment.
That is, of course, unless your first name was “Lecresia” and your last name “Campbell.” Her fashion was well received. By layering heartfelt innuendo on top of phrases, Campbell was doing what I’d only dared to hope for: making a very formal vocal presentation palatable to the religious crowds.
Another aspect of her music that kept me interested on the day I listened to all of her songs again was her ability to “minister” the song. I came to listen to music. I remained to engage in ministry. As I listened to Ms. Campbell’s rendition of “I’m In His Safety,” the tenderness in her voice helped me find calm.
I discovered that week that Campbell had had a stroke from a Facebook post. She supposedly had a subsequent surgery that went well, and tomorrow, Sept. 30, she was supposed to be discharged from the hospital. As Campbell posted a statement on Facebook on September 7 announcing that she will be responding to messages, fans hoped for a full recovery.
