Eleven goals were scored by her in 79 international games. Together with Germany, she won the European Championships in Sweden in 2013 and the Olympic Gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. The defender, who was born in Stuttgart, also captured two European Championships with the U17 and U19 national teams.
“Playing in my first women’s international game fulfilled a dream for me,” remarked Leonie Maier. I’ve dedicated the last ten years of my life to playing for Germany, and I’ve always considered it an honour. For everything that our team was able to accomplish, I am incredibly proud and appreciative. I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who helped me throughout this incredible and unique moment.
“A brilliant personality and a well-deserved Germany international”
Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, the head coach of Germany, stated: “Leonie has had fantastic success with the women’s national team. She has a fantastic personality and is a well-deserving international for Germany. She has always brought a tonne to the table, not just in terms of football, but also as a person.
She was a big value to the entire team. We can only express our gratitude for her many years of selfless work on behalf of the national team. We’ll say farewell to her properly as a group at a later date that needs to be determined.
The national team’s sporting director, Joti Chatzialexiou, stated: “Leone Maier, a European champion and Olympic champion who played a significant role in the titles and accomplishments of the national team, is stepping down from the national team.
She is an inspiration to many young female football players because of her international career, which began with the youth teams. We send her our warmest wishes for the remainder of her career and beyond.
