Lilia Vu News

After fellow American Angel Yin’s approach ball into the water on Sunday at the Chevron Championship, Lilia Vu birdied the opening playoff hole to win her first major. Vu’s approach shot landed just over the green while Yin’s second shot sailed short, left, and splashed into the pond protecting the par-5 18th hole.

Vu attempted a putt from off the green and fell far short, but she made the save from approximately 10 feet to win. A custom carried over from this tournament’s previous location at Mission Hills in the California desert, the 25-year-old Californian won for the second time on the LPGA Tour and dove into the pond in celebration.

At Carlton Woods, Vu birdied her final two holes to finish with a 4-under 68 and a four-day total of 10-under 278. She then watched as rivals like Yin struggled. However, Yin forced a playoff after making bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes. She then birdied the 18th.

After a difficult start to her professional career, Vu, a UCLA athlete, she thought about giving up the sport. Before finally breaking through in February with a victory at the Honda LPGA Thailand, she had a strong 2022 after regrouping and winning three times on the developing Epson Tour. She entered this competition with a world ranking of 12, while Yin, 24, who started pro while still in high school, was ranked 172.

The event, known as the Dinah Shore for its longtime celebrity host, left the California desert for the woodlands of suburban Houston under a six-year arrangement with Chevron after failing to find a sponsor ready to extend the half-century run at Mission Hills.

Since 1988, winners at Mission Hills have jumped into Poppie’s Pond near the 18th green. Vu continued the tradition on a chilly day by diving off a little dock into the murky water.

The winnings from the $5.1 million purse, the highest ever for this competition, totalled $765,000 for Vu. Global No. 2 Nelly Korda finished alone in third place at 9 under despite her persistent putting difficulties on Sunday with an eagle on the 18th.
