Lindsey Halligan News

According to two people with knowledge of the situation, John Rowley, James Trusty, and Lindsey Halligan, lawyers for former President Donald Trump, met with special counsel Jack Smith and federal prosecutors at the Justice Department Monday morning at 10 a.m.

In the midst of a document probe, Trump’s attorneys meet with the special counsel at Justice.

The meeting with top federal law enforcement authorities happened a few weeks after Trump’s attorneys had asked for one. After spending just under two hours in the Main Justice building, the former president’s legal team declined to comment on their discussion as they left.

Trump’s legal team was seen entering the Justice Department by CBS News cameras. The attorneys for the former president didn’t say anything as they walked into the Washington, DC, facility. Attorney General Merrick Garland was reportedly absent from the meeting between the three lawyers and the department, according to a person with knowledge of the event.

According to two people with knowledge of the investigation, Trump’s legal team is dissatisfied with how Justice Department officials have handled attorney-client cases lately and will probably bring up these issues during the meeting on Monday, particularly the prosecutors’ discussions of related matters in front of the grand jury.

A federal judge ruled earlier this year that Trump’s lawyer must go before a grand jury in Washington, D.C., which is looking into the former president’s retention of documents with classified markings.

In the past, the lawyer, Evan Corcoran, declined to speak to investigators about his conversations with Trump, citing issues with attorney-client privilege. A source earlier told CBS news last week that prosecutors in the special counsel’s office wanted to question Corcoran about an alleged call he allegedly had with Trump on June 24, 2022, around the time that investigators were trying to collect papers at Trump’s home and video security tapes of Mar-a-Lago.

The special counsel’s office requested that D.C. District Chief Judge Beryl Howell reject Corcoran’s assertions of privilege and compel him to testify against Trump on the grounds that the conversations between the two parties’ respective attorneys may have furthered criminal behaviour. According to the sources, Howell’s secret order only partially granted that request and mandated that Corcoran’s testimony be subject to the so-called “crime-fraud exception” with regard to a particular set of inquiries.

An appeals court upheld Howell’s decision and denied the former president’s plea to end Corcoran’s testimony. Judge James Boasberg, who decided earlier this year that former Vice President Mike Pence had to appear before a grand jury in the special counsel’s second investigation, took up Howell’s position as chief judge on the D.C. federal court.
