Louis Cunningham News
Marie Antoinette is currently experiencing a revival, and it won’t be over anytime soon. The second season of Marie Antoinette, a Canal+ drama that made its PBS debut last week, has been ordered. Louis Cunningham and Emilia Schüle will reprise their roles as King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, respectively.
Variety reports that season two “will show how the royal couple dealt with an extraordinary financial catastrophe at the height of their reign. The constant attacks by Provence and Chartres on the royal couple incited the nobility’s enmity with disastrous results.”
The show’s creator Deborah Davis will return to serve as executive producer for a second season, and Ed Bazalgette will helm the first four episodes of that season. The shooting is anticipated to start this September.
Cathy Payne, CEO of Banijay Rights, the show’s international distributor, said in a statement, “The flawless, high-quality production is filled with glamorous talent and opulent locations, and we’re thrilled to offer a landmark new season of this unique interpretation of the fashionable French queen to global audiences.”
The French queen is shown in a feminist light in the show. “She wasn’t at all like the woman to whom history clings. She wasn’t a sloppy monarch who didn’t care about the French people. She was misunderstood and had her own perspective of the world “Emilia Schüle, an actress, explains T&C. “She was far more sophisticated and contemporary. She truly, in my opinion, best represents the ideas of equality, uniqueness, and self-determination that we hold today.”
