Lucy Thomas Singer News
Lucy Thomas, 17, of the Elmbrook Swim Club broke her own Wisconsin Swimming LSC 17-18 mark in the 100 breaststrokes at the Wisconsin Senior Short Course Championships last month.
Thomas, a recruit to Stanford, won in 58.84, shaving.05 seconds off her previous record. She was a crucial component of four winning Elmbrook relay teams, with her performance on the 200 medley relay highlighted by a breast split of 27.88. Thomas added personal bests in the 50 fly (24.54) and 100 free, two off-events (49.16).
A few weeks later, Thomas shaved a few more tenths off her LSC record in the 100 breasts with a time of 58.65 at the NCSA Spring Championships. She also set a 50-breast PR of 27.01. After Stanford’s top breaststroker, fifth-year Allie Raab, split 27.34 and 59.20 on the medley relays at the NCAA Championships earlier this month, those marks should be a welcome sight for Cardinal coaches. At the NCAAs, the Cardinal finished fourth in the 400 medley relay and ninth in the 200 medley relay.
Thomas broke the LSC 17–18 record with a 2:09.16 in the NCSAs last year at the age of 16. Although she was unable to repeat that feat at this year’s NCSAs, Reese Tiltmann’s prior record from last year was still surpassed by more than two seconds thanks to her season-best 2:11.10 time.
Maggie Wanezek, a 17-year-old Wisconsin recruit and Thomas’ teammate at Elmbrook, recorded lifetime bests in off-events including the 50 breasts (30.17) and 100 breasts but fell short of her best marks in her core backstroke competition (1:03.98). However, Wanezek broke the Wisconsin Swimming LSC 17-18 mark of 1:50.66 set by current University of Virginia standout Reilly Tiltmann back in 2021 at NCSAs by clocking a 1:50.63 to win the 200 back.
Wanezek (24.31) beat 15-year-old Alana Berlin (24.40) by less than a tenth of a second in the 50 back, making it an interesting race. Berlin, a member of the Schroeder YMCA Swim Team, improved upon her previous personal best of 24.71 from November of 2021 by a few tenths. Wanezek previously recorded a time under 24 in this competition, clocking in at 23.98 last November.
