Luke Murray News

If you haven’t been paying close attention to the Huskies, you’ve probably found yourself wondering those things during the past several weeks and may have even Googled them.

In the past few weeks, the renowned actor and comedian has been frequently spotted at UConn games, including those during the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden, in Albany when the Huskies faced Iona and then St. Mary’s, and this past weekend in Las Vegas when UConn defeated Arkansas and Gonzaga.

If you were watching the Iona game on television, he was difficult to miss. The TV cameras captured him occasionally, most notably after centre Adama Sanogo’s long jump. With roughly three minutes left, the Huskies were up 84-63, and he was seen chuckling presumably in shock. Given that UConn trailed by two points at the half, it was difficult to understand.

Murray is likely the biggest supporter of a specific assistant coach, Luke Murray, in addition to the Huskies as a whole. That’s correct, the father of a UConn assistant coach is Dr Peter Venkman from Ghostbusters, Phil Connors from Groundhog Day, and Pvt—John Winger from Stripes.

After that Iona game, Luke Murray described his father as being “locked in.” He watches every game, after all, so he sends me the recaps. He kind of always refers to Andre [Jackson] and Adama when talking about two guys. Murray, 38, joined the Huskies after working with Louisville for three years and is now in his second season as an assistant. He worked for Dan Hurley when the head coach was at Rhode Island and subsequently Wagner.

Bill Murray has occasionally been noticed in the audience over the past two seasons, notably during UConn’s trip to the Bahamas last year. Yet the TV camera has to find him for viewers at home to notice. It does occasionally, but sometimes he can slip by unobserved.

Murray was spotted in the audience as coach Hurley approached to cheer and thank the crowd following the victory over Arkansas in the Sweet 16. In a playful reference to Arkansas coach Eric Musselman, who did the same after defeating No. 1 seed Kansas in the previous round, Murray recommended Hurley remove his shirt.
