Story of Malikkappuram
“Malikappuram,” produced by debutant Vishnu Sasi Shankar, narrates the story of an 8-year-old girl Kalyani also known as Kallu, a girl hailing from Panchalimedu village, who is eight years old. It focuses on her constant desire to go to the Sabarimala Ayappan Temple. In telling the story of the ‘Malikappuram’ (all girls who visit Sabarimala on their first visit are described as Malikappuram) The film explores the way faith is ingrained in the minds of children. It has created such an impact that children watching the film were singing ‘Swamiye-Sharanamayyappa’ at the conclusion of the movie. For anyone who has visited Sabarimala before, it’s like a return visit to the temple by watching the carefully planned frames that take you from Erumeli to the sanctum sanctorum temple. The initial portion of the film takes place situated in a typical village that is filled with local legends and depicts an innocent girl’s desire to visit Sabarimala. Due to tragic circumstances the trip is delayed and then she along with her companion Piyush who is played by Sreepath who has done an excellent job in the role, decide to travel to Sabarimala and visit Sabarimala. The film also focuses on the idea of ‘Tatvamasi’, where every person is viewed as a Brahman and is based on Hindu theology.
Even though the film was based on a few basic principles and was based on the idea of a temple that has been deeply ingrained into people’s minds Keralites The film has made an enormous impact both for those who were enthralled by it and those who were averse to it. In certain parts of the world, the film caused the fury of communists as well as radical Islamist Keralites all over the world. The RSS/BJP supporters who posted positive reviews of the film via social networks, are victimized by cyberbullying that is vile. Additionally, C Praglesh, a local leader and writer from Malappuram who is a member of his Communist Party of India (CPI) associated Yuva Kala Sahithi, too was forced to take the brunt for his praise of the film. Praglesh has also been named the editor for local editions of the CPI’s official mouthpiece Janayugam as well as the CPI area secretary for Ponnani. After watching the film the writer of the communist movement expressed his gratitude on Facebook. This didn’t go well with other communists within the state. The trolls began to take off. This isn’t surprising because the film is a bold effort to make waves in Kerala where an uncompromising devotional film was made mainstream. However, the left-leaning Malayalam film industry is having a difficult time recognizing this fact.
Following that the Supreme Court ordered entry of women to the old temple, communists in the state began their efforts to push their agenda of demolishing another symbol of Hindu worship, without taking any legal recourse to the Supreme Court judgement. It’s a fact that a lot of people protested in the streets against women’s admission, but the Chief Minister was not showing the courage to comprehend this. The verdict and following developments in the state have caused social, political and even cultural turmoil that was unimaginable and surprising. For many of the faithful the verdict and the date (28th September 2018,) has been a day of darkness that is a day of ominous surprise when the state’s highest constitutional court decided to breach the very foundations of their belief with Swami Ayyappa. The appeals, which were until the time of the verdict, a cry for devotion and faith, took on hues of political discord and became a scream of war against the state apparatus which wanted to sabotage the sacredness of a temple which Hindus particularly those who belong to Kerala loved the most to their hearts. The insistence that was displayed by the Kerala Chief Minister, Pinrayi Vijayan, meant that the state’s situation state deteriorated when the temple was inaugurated in October, during the time of pilgrimage. The attempted entry of an “activist” who was not even a devotee , on the 18th of October 2018 worsened the situation considerably. This is because the Pinarayi Vijayan government promoted the agenda under the name of “Navothanam” (Renaissance) however, it’s interesting to observe it is that the Vijayan government used the term of ‘Renaissance’ exclusively for the majority of the population, while embracing the views of Islamist as well as Jihadist to accommodate their requirements and adhere to orthodoxy.
