NXIVM leader Keith Raniere was defended by Marc Agnifilo in press conferences, in documentaries, and while he was being tried in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn for about two months while sitting next to him. Agnifilo is now stepping away from the case of Raniere, the notorious self-help guru known as “Vanguard” who is in incarcerated in Arizona serving a 120-year federal term. In letters submitted to federal court on February 23, the defence counsel and Teny Geragos, another Raniere attorney, indicated their resignations from the case.
The lawyers are resigning because Raniere, previously of Halfmoon, who founded his cult-like firm in Colonie for 20 years, has hired Jennifer Bonjean, Joseph McBride, and Steven Alan Metcalf II to represent him in his appeal. Among other places, it has branches in Vancouver, Mexico, Los Angeles, and the state of Washington. In June 2019, a jury found Raniere, now 60, guilty of sex trafficking, conspiracy to engage in forced labour, and racketeering, as well as underlying offences involving the possession of child pornography, extortion, and identity theft.
Agnifilo wrote in a letter to Senior U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis: “I humbly want to be lawfully removed as counsel of record for Mr. Raniere now that Mr. Raniere’s new attorneys have entered appearances in this matter. “I have discussed my intention to withdraw with Mr Raniere, and he agrees,” she said. Agnifilo claimed that because Raniere has new attorneys, his resignation wouldn’t harm him. It wasn’t known if Raniere’s co-defendant Agnifilo, Albany lawyer Paul DerOhannesian, would also be leaving the case.
Agnifilo fiercely defended Raniere at press conferences outside the federal courthouse in Brooklyn and in the courtroom, where DerOhannesian joined him. Agnifilo minimised the notion that women in Raniere’s covert “master/slave” organisation, Dominus Obsequious Sororium, or DOS, were marked on their pelvic regions during a press conference in May 2018. The extent of the branding, the discomfort, and the appearance of the branding, according to victims, were not disclosed.

In his closing remarks to the jury in June 2019, Agnifilo warned them that using the word “cult” in their deliberations would be detrimental. I believe you should consider the content and not let that word influence you, “added he.
He concluded by saying that DOS was “not for everyone.” However, he said that a former “slave” who had been sexually assaulted by Raniere and had been blindfolded, stripped, and driven to a Halfmoon residence may have benefited from it because she had previously been suicidal and was not after DOS.
