I go by the moniker “PK” (for preacher’s child). Since I was approximately 9 years old, my father has gathered verses from his bible, sat at the edge of his bed, and sewn them together. Once or twice a week, he would stand in front of a crowd and share a narrative in the hopes that it might improve someone’s perspective on life and draw them closer to God. Like a lot of PKs, they anticipated that I would join the “family business.” It made sense because I was the preacher’s oldest son and a natural public speaker.
But after talking to the Lord, we both decided that wasn’t the Lord’s plan for your boy. The idea was for the marquee to read, “Dr. Marcel A. Spears: World Famous Zoologist!” I would work as a jazz musician by night and an animal biologist by day.
A photo of me holding a trumpet and a lemur on my shoulder would be placed next to that marquee. The lemur and I would be sporting matching New Orleans Saints shirts so you can get the entire picture. For an 11-year-old boy, that was a good strategy.
Now, almost 30 years later, I find myself on a platform in front of an audience, presenting a narrative in the hopes that it would influence someone’s perspective on life. God is at work.
I work in acting. I am a storyteller who is currently working as an actor, to be more precise. As I’m writing this, I’m fortunate enough to be employed at my dream company, which I view as a big blessing. To be quite honest, I have no idea how to be a “working artist” by any stretch of the imagination. It seems like the person running my 29-year experiment has no idea what to make of the results.
Actors encounter a seemingly endless series of noes, and until we hear ‘yes’, it’s simple to feel as though we are working in a vacuum. (And on occasion, that bubble can seem incredibly little.) We also need to find out how to pay for food and housing, or some combination of the two. Since “The Mayor” on ABC had been picked up for a series, I was actually homeless when I learned this.
