Marcus Mariota News

In the NFL, it is said that when a team has two quarterbacks, they truly have none. Although this adage may be partially accurate, it typically refers to the approach rather than the individual players.

Marcus Mariota was the starting quarterback for Atlanta going into the 2022 season, but he was only acquired as a bridge option after the team dealt Matt Ryan. Desmond Ridder, a quarterback, was eventually selected by the Falcons in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

After using Mariota for the first 13 games, head coach Arthur Smith switched to Ridder for the remainder of the campaign. Both quarterbacks had issues, but throughout his four-game period, Ridder made strides.

In a brand-new QB index feature, NFL.com’s Marc Sessler ranked the top 68 quarterbacks in the league. Mariota came in at number 27, just ahead of Ridder:

“Mariota was benched for Desmond Ridder and then walked away from the team entirely. If his career isn’t over, the former first-rounder did himself no favors with a body of work characterized by late-game gaffes, costly turnovers and an inability to connect with superstar-in-waiting Kyle Pitts. Now benched twice in his NFL tenure under the watch of Arthur Smith, Mariota fades into the woodwork.”

Despite the fact that Mariota is still officially under contract, it seems unlikely that he will be back in 2023 after the way this season ended. The Falcons would free up $12 million in cap space by cutting Mariota.

Regarding Ridder, the rookie was ranked No. 34 on the QB index by NFL.com. Sessler wrote the following about the former Cincinnati star:

“The third-rounder went four starts and 115 passes without throwing a pick. He grew in concert with first-year wideout Drake London and gives coach Arthur Smith something to work with if Atlanta doesn’t grab a passer with the draft’s No. 8 overall pick. I also consider the Falcons a dark-horse destination for former Smith pupil Ryan Tannehill if the Titans have eyes for another.”
