Martha Entenmann passed away Friday at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, Long Island. She was the matriarch of the family that transformed a little Bay Shore, Long Island bakery into Entenmann’s, one of the biggest and most well-known baked goods enterprises in the country. She resided in Islip and was 89.
The family patriarch of baked goods, Martha Entenmann, is 89 years old.
According to her son William 3rd, Mrs. Entenmann had a cardiac condition in recent years and passed away as a result of complications from surgery.
Mrs. Entenmann, who had three sons and had married the bakery’s founder’s son, played an active role in the business for more than 50 years. She kept the books, ran the office, and, after her husband passed away in 1951, shared managerial decisions with her sons until her retirement 15 years later.
When Entenmann’s went public in 1976, the stock certificates of the company featured a picture of Mrs. Entenmann, also known as Mrs. E to the hundreds of workers at the 14-acre Bay Shore facility where doughnuts, cakes, cookies, and other baked goods were packaged in white boxes with the blue-bannered Entenmann’s label.
The former Martha Schneider, who was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1906, married her boss, William Entenmann Jr., whose father had started the company in Brooklyn in 1898, when she was 19 years old and working as a salesperson at a Bay Shore bakery. Eventually, all three of their sons—Robert, Charles, and William—joined the business, which flourished on Long Island with house deliveries despite the Great Depression and World War II.
After her husband’s death in the 1950s, Mrs. Entenmann and her sons focused more on cakes, pies, and pastries instead of producing bread and rolls. They also ceased providing home deliveries in favour of grocery shops and supermarket chains, and they grew from Long Island to Miami, Chicago, and several other cities.
Entenmann’s was sold twice, once in 1978 for $233 million to the pharmaceutical company Warner-Lambert and then in 1982 for $315 million to General Foods. Philip Morris bought General Foods in 1985, and Entenmann’s joined Kraft Foods. Entenmann’s and three additional Kraft brand names were purchased by CPC International for $865 million last year.
Her three sons, Robert of Riverhead, L.I., Charles of Oak Beach, L.I., and William 3rd of Islip, as well as her eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, survive her.
