Party insiders are lobbying for a female candidate to run for the marginal seat in the Aston by-election, which has attracted a wide range of highly skilled women. The contest is being held as a result of the formal resignation of former cabinet minister Alan Tudge, who vacated his suburban seat in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs on Friday.

His choice was prompted by accusations of mental and physical abuse during a consensual relationship with one of his staff members, which he has consistently denied, and by questions from the Robodebt royal commission.

Aston is home to the suburbs of Bayswater, Boronia, and Ferntree Gully. Since retiring MP Alan Tudge narrowly won reelection in the May 2022 federal election with a margin of 2.8%, the formerly secure Liberal seat has become competitive. Labour’s candidate, Mary Doyle, has already been named by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. To pre-select a woman for the position, Mr Tudge resigned in response to party and public pressure.

Peter Dutton, the leader of the opposition, has previously stated that the Liberal party should choose a female candidate in advance. Mr. Dutton claimed in a statement that he had discussed that expectation with important Victorian Liberal figures.

According to political scientist Andrea Carson of La Trobe University, the Liberal party has less representation in the lower house today than it did more than 20 years ago, when John Howard was prime minister. “The Liberal party’s female representation, notably in the lower house, has stagnated at least for the last 20 years,” she claimed.

The need to increase female representation, according to her, is necessary in light of claims that party culture is unwelcoming to women as well as more serious allegations of bullying and sexual assault.

A highly qualified field of candidates has already confirmed their nomination for pre-selection by the Liberal party, despite the by-date election’s not yet being announced. Oncologist and Guardian columnist Ranjana Srivastava has declared she will apply for pre-selection.
