The hiring represents the most recent development in a protracted probe that has recently moved in stops and spurts. Cyrus R. Vance Jr., Mr. Bragg’s predecessor, had instructed prosecutors to start presenting evidence before he entered office in January.
Yet Mr. Bragg began to wonder whether the case was solid. When he informed Mark F. Pomerantz and Carey Dunne, the two top prosecutors overseeing the investigation, that he was not ready to authorise charges, they abruptly resigned in February, casting doubt on the investigation’s future.
Mr. Bragg argued that it was still going on, and in recent months, his prosecutors, under the direction of Susan Hoffinger, the office’s head of investigations, have refocused on a hush-money payment to a porn star who claimed to have had an affair with Mr. Trump.
The work that Mr. Colangelo did while working for the New York attorney general’s office may also be helpful in his new position because Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, and Manhattan prosecutors both investigated whether the former president had improperly inflated the value of his assets. She launched a lawsuit against the former president in September, charging him with having vastly inflated the value of his assets.
Before President Biden assumed office, Mr Colangelo had been appointed as acting associate attorney general and was already employed by the Department of Justice. Mr. Colangelo was involved in the administration of the Civil, Civil Rights, Antitrust, and Tax divisions among others at that position, which was the third highest ranked in the department.
When Vanita Gupta was named as the permanent associate attorney general, he resigned but remained to serve as her deputy and oversaw the attorneys in those divisions.
Mr. Colangelo, 48, who served as a senior Labor Department official during the Obama administration, will join the district attorney’s office as senior counsel. He is anticipated to concentrate on housing and tenant protection, labour and worker protection, priorities for Mr. Bragg, in addition to assisting with its “most sensitive and high-profile white-collar investigations.”
In a statement announcing the hire, Mr. Bragg stated that Matthew Colangelo “brings a wealth of economic justice experience combined with complex white-collar investigations, and he has the sound judgement and integrity needed to pursue justice against powerful people and institutions when they abuse their power.”
Merrick B. Garland, the U.S. attorney general, stated in a statement that since his first day in office, he has depended on Mr Colangelo’s “wise counsel and outstanding judgement.”
