Megumi Kagurazaka News
Favourite of the film festival Sion Sono, 57, is currently recovering at a hospital in Tokyo after having emergency surgery on Thursday due to a heart attack.
The cult Japanese director reportedly dialled 911 on Thursday when he started having chest issues at his Shinjuku neighbourhood residence in Tokyo.
Sono had a heart attack, his agency said, adding that “he now needs time to recover.” Last week, Megumi Kagurazaka, Sono’s wife and a participant in seven of his movies, gave birth to their first kid.
Sono made his film debut in 1990 with Bicycle Sighs (Jitensha Toiki). Since then, he has won accolades at various international cinema festivals and amassed a cult following thanks to his eccentric and thought-provoking works, such as Love Exposure (2008) and Cold Fish (2010).
In 2011, Sono’s Himizu competed at the Venice International Film Festival, where Shota Sometani and Fumi Nikaido separately won awards for best young actor and actress. Sono received a membership invitation to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences last year.
After directing Vampire Hotel for Amazon in 2017, the director is currently working on a drama for Netflix that is scheduled to premiere this year. He will also serve as Nicolas Cage’s first foreign-produced director for the criminal thriller Prisoners of the Ghostland. Imogen Poots will also star in Ghostland, it was revealed on Wednesday at the Berlin Film Festival.
